Global warming alarm again: Greenland sled dogs wade through melting ice
China News Service, June 19. According to Hong Kong's "Wen Wei Po", the weather in Greenland, located in the Arctic Circle, has continued to warm significantly recently, causing a large amount of ice to melt. Olson, a researcher at the Ocean and Ice Research Center of the Danish Meteorological Institute, saw sled dogs being forced to wade on the ice. He took a photo and uploaded it to social networks, triggering discussions among netizens.

According to reports, this photo was taken in Inglefield Bay in northwest Greenland. Mottram, another meteorologist at the institute, noted that during this time, scientists would take sleds every year to retrieve research instruments. But this year, the ice melted into water in many areas the team traveled through.
Olson estimated that the ice in the area in the photo was about 1.2 meters thick, but the melted ice water had reached the sled dog's ankles, and it was difficult for him to recover the instrument.
It is reported that meteorological records at Carnac Airport near Inglefield Bay show that the local temperature was 17.3 degrees Celsius on the 12th, and 15 degrees Celsius on the 13th. Even though it is summer in Greenland, this temperature is not unusual.
The Arctic ice melt period generally reaches its peak in July, but as of July 13, Greenland accounted for 40% of the ice melt, and the ice melt is expected to further intensify in the next few weeks. Olson warned that as the ice continues to melt, Greenland residents' daily activities such as hunting and transportation will be affected.
Mottram described that the ice in Greenland is very thick, so even if a large amount of ice melts, water will still remain on the surface of the ice, causing sled dogs to wade through the water.
Mottram said that it is impossible to evaluate the role of global warming in this large-scale ice melt at this stage, but it is estimated that as the climate changes, Greenland's ice will only become thinner.
