Newport County officially announced the appointment of 39-year-old former Leicester City Premier League champion Christian Fuchs as the new head coach.

Fuchs has served as Dean Smith’s assistant coach at Charlotte FC in the Major Leagues for the past two years. He succeeds Welshman Dave Hughes, who left the club following Saturday's defeat by Shrewsbury Town in the League Two relegation battle.

As a player, Fuchs played for the Bundesliga and the Premier League for a long time, and miraculously won the Premier League championship with Leicester City in 2016.

Newport County Chairman Hugh Jenkins said that Fuchs's ambitions are highly consistent with the club's goals and he hopes that he can improve the team's current situation in the English League Two. Fuchs is expected to form his own coaching staff and make his managerial debut away to Oldham on Saturday.
