Recently, Scholes criticized Arteta and Guardiola for coaching in a podcast.

In the fifth round of the Premier League, Arsenal tied Manchester City 1-1. Arteta was criticized for placing the troops, and he chose a combination of Suvimenti, Rice and Merino in the midfield to let Eze sit on the bench, while Odgao was absent due to injury.

Arteta replaced Eze in the half, but Carragher accused Arteta of wasting the first 45 minutes of the game, during which time Arsenal did little on the offensive end. Scholes agrees with this view, and he believes that the two coaches are too cautious.

Scholes said of Arteta in the podcast: "I think it's a very negative team. He's almost back 20 years ago. I know he's been in England for a long time, but it's almost like we're bringing him an English mindset: 'Be careful first, be safe first, try to get through the game'."

"You can say that to both of them too. If there were two English coaches coaching on Sunday, we would say, 'The worst coach in history, the worst football style in history.' But because it was both of them, people forgive me, didn't they?"

Scholes believes that Arteta's steady thinking cannot help Arsenal close the gap with the top.

Scholes said: "If Arsenal want to win the Premier League, they have to win a tough battle at some point and they are not brave enough. Especially at home. I always feel like winning home games at the beginning of the season, especially against strong teams.

"If you are away, like going to Liverpool or some other tough place and tied, that's great, you can accept it." But yesterday's home game was a huge opportunity to show its strength. I don't think Arsenal has performed well recently.

"It feels like, 'I'm going to pick the strongest player squad I can send and try to get through.' Maybe thinking about winning with set pieces. You mention Allardyce and those England coaches, that's exactly what they're trying to do. But you're talking about a top club now, that's not true."
