A reporter from the Sun passed along the route of the accident site and found two adult deer on a small road, less than half a mile from the location of the accident in Jota. The speed limit for the accident section is 120km/h, and Spanish investigators believe that the tire blowout may be the cause of the vehicle deviating from the road. Spanish police said they have not yet actively considered whether it was wild animals that caused the accident, but have not ruled out this possibility. Other animal hazards reportedly caused the accident in the area include Iberian wolf wandering in the driveway and herds of crows.

A52 was a well-known accident-prone site before the tragedy of Jota, partly due to its rugged terrain and numerous wildlife.
